I posted this list on PaleoHacks a couple of years ago, and I’m reposting because I wanted to have a record of it here. It’s from a radio interview Chris Masterjohn did back in November 2011 with Cary Nosler, where Chris pointed out that Weston A Price found that healthy groups generally consumed one or more of the following [40:00]:
- raw dairy
- pastured eggs & organ meats
- shellfish/seafood
- insects/whole small animals
I’m thinking it might be an interesting experiment to worry less about macronutrients (save for getting sufficient protein) or restricting whole food groups or solely eating intuitively and concentrate more on eating these foods regularly. Perhaps this could be a useful gateway to healthier behaviors.
As an aside, I hadn’t remembered Chris’ discussion on agriculture and the wisdom required to do it correctly. If you buy the paleo line that things went all downhill after the advent of agriculture, I encourage you to listen starting around 30 minutes or so. Good stuff!
Weight Maven is written by Beth Mazur. Beth believes that obesity is more symptom than cause and that the real problem is our Western diet -- especially sugar, refined grains, and industrial oils. Beth writes about nutrition, ancestral health, & food policy. And cats!
…well, I’ve got 3/4? Unfortunately my guts just will not get on the dairy train, raw or otherwise :/
But to address your real point, I definitely think there’s something there. I personally respond much better to the Weston A. Price-style enthusiasm about foods that are awesome than to the dire warnings about how [insert nutritional bad guy here] will kill you dead. Also, it seems like “eat more of these” would lend itself a lot less to the “well, I blew it -> binge” mindset than “eliminate ______.”
