I recommend that you use [paleo/primal] as your default diet…meaning most of the time. We all “go off” here and there, but it works better if deviation is rare. That’s because I remain impressed with the ability of grains, starches and sugars to take over in the brain (or gut). Those who regain their weight have almost always been co-opted by these kind of carbs.

Couldn’t agree more!!!
I have a little problem with the anti-grains position, although I have no scientific basis for my opinion. A way of eating that is heavy with white bread, pizza and spaghetti is different from the occasional slice of wheat bread, brown rice or breakfast cereal.
I understand that it’s probably the trans fat in chips that makes them a danger in our home, but a loaf of bread will go bad before we finish it.
I like what SummerTomato has to say re grains. I think that we’re better adapted to non-grain sources of foods from an evolutionary perspective. But I also think the WAPF folks are right that, properly preparing grains (via fermenting, sprouting, or soaking) makes them more suitable for human consumption.
For now, I’m eating white rice a few times a week and wheat every few weeks. I may add more grains in once I get to my goal re weight, but for now, I’m sticking to tubers and white rice for my carbs.
