So, saw this making the rounds today:
Researchers from Israel have determined that more than half of liver transplant recipients develop post-transplantation metabolic syndrome (PTMS), placing them at greater risk for cardiovascular disease. Prior to transplantation only 5% of the patients were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, but rates of obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, and diabetes were significantly higher post transplantation.
The press release has some details about the study, but one that isn’t mentioned is whether the donor had metabolic syndrome.
I don’t know enough about screening for transplants, so maybe I’m way off base. But wouldn’t that be interesting to know?

I’m coming up to 10 years post liver and kidney transplant and I’m in excellent health, unlike most of the other transplant recipients I meet at the hospitals when going for my regular checkups. I’ve improved my health dramatically in the past couple of years by going very low carb and very high animal fat. Plenty of organic meat, eggs and cheese and wild fish, some leafy green vegetables, very occasional fruit and some chocolate. My liver and kidney functions are perfect and my weight, though a bit on the high side, is normal for a woman of my age (58). I’m only a few kilos overweight and pretty fit despite my mobility problems due to the fact that I’m totally blind.
