I’m often struck by how much obesity reminds me of the six blind men and the elephant.
Pharma folks think it’s all about drugs. Fitness folks think it’s all about exercise. Dieticians think it’s all about cutting out fat or maybe eating multiple smaller meals. Psych folk think it’s about therapy or intuitive eating or 12-step programs. Public health folks think it’s about taxing soda or banning ads. Et cetera, et cetera.
I’m sure all of these have their place in the solution. But just a hint. If you think you have “the answer” to solving the obesity problem, you’re probably looking at just one part of the elephant.

Weight Maven is written by Beth Mazur. Beth believes that obesity is more symptom than cause and that the real problem is our modern culture -- especially diet. Beth writes about ancestral health, health policy, & mindfulness. And cats!
I like your analogy.
Obesity is kinda like cancer: there are over 400 types of cancer. There’s no magic bullet that will take care of all 400+.

Dr. Parker,
I’m not sure that I quite see the resemblance between obesity and cancer. While I agree that the dramatic rise of obesity is multifactorial, there is a very clear correlation between caloric consumption and obesity. Can you not say that eating less would have a significant impact on obesity prevention?
People are unique.
What works for one person or a massive group of people may not work for you.
It is all about finding your niche in fitness, health, and exercise.
I’m still looking for mine, but I feel like I’m progressing.
