Great post from Debra on the irony of the Building Trust in Obesity workshop this past weekend in Canada:
… the foxes (Big Food) are building trust with the farmers (Health Care agencies and nonprofits) to decide what to do about the chickens (fat people). The chickens have no voice. … What a crock, and an irony.
I liked Yoni Freedhoff’s commentary on Twitter:
Would there be a building trust workshop at a cancer conference with cigarette manufacturers?
It will never be food industry’s “task” to make healthy food. Will be to satisfy consumer demand, increase sales and elevate brand.
Full disclosure. I simply “trust” that food corporations partner with health organizations to directly/indirectly increase sales.
Hank Cardello (author of Stuffed) argues that working with industry is preferable to the alternative. He may have a point. I remain neutral re policy and legislation — at least as far as effectiveness goes.
That said, I suffer no illusions that industry has any other interest than the bottom line.
