Here are this week’s interesting links:
- The western diet and lifestyle and diseases of civilization - The fathers of paleo/ancestral health make their case for adopting a pre-agricultural diet & lifestyle. [A must read!]
- Obesity Experts Urge Focus on Visceral Adiposity, Fat in Liver - [Less focus on BMI? Count me in!]
- The perils of food and nutrition research - Marion Nestle advises readers of single-factor studies to consider plausibility, controls, & sponsorship. See also: Damned statistics and the nutrition literature.
- The Dose of Intervention and the Land of Dr. Oz - Gary Taubes discusses the concept that we’re not all built the same as far as carb metabolism goes. [I don't agree with Taubes on everything, but yeesh, Dr. Oz should be embarrassed by how badly he misstated Taubes' positions.]
- What Makes Fructose Fattening? - Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University explore how the brain responds differently to fructose from glucose. [Nope, it's not just HFCS, it's all the added sugar!]
- Fructose, exercise, and health - [Lots of exercise may protect against excess fructose; the real reason being sedentary is associated with obesity?]
- Physical activity protects our body from cognitive stress - Peter Janiszewski reviews a study that looks at the effect of exercise on stress. [IMO, exercise in support of calories in vs out? Not useful. Exercise in support of various health mechanisms? Critical.]
- Nightmare on ELMM street - [Speaking of calories in/out, I love Drs Sharma & Freedhoff's description of "eat less, move more" gone bad!]
Weight Maven is written by Beth Mazur. Beth believes that obesity is more symptom than cause and that the real problem is our Western diet -- especially sugar, refined grains, and industrial oils. Beth writes about nutrition, ancestral health, & food policy. And cats!
