This past weekend, Travis Saunders made a case for the practice of weekend roundups: links to “articles and blog posts that we think might be of interest to our readers.”
Between the good arguments for such a practice and the fact that I haven’t posted in a week (tho the items in the queue are really piling up … the perils of a day job), I thought “sounds like a plan!”
So here are the links I found interesting this week:
- A Big Fat Debate - Civil Eats has a nice post on the comeback of healthy fats.
- Stigma weighs heavily on obese people, contributing to greater health problems - [It's not just the adipose tissue that makes obesity unhealthy.]
- It never goes away - Michael Prager (author of Fat Boy, Thin Man) talks about how the desire to eat junk doesn’t go away, even decades later. [No surprise really. Good news is that it gets very manageable.]
- New Alternative to BMI for Measuring Body Fat - This new measure uses hip circumference instead of weight to supposedly get a more accurate picture of body fat percentage. [Better than the BMI, but doesn't reflect important health differences between visceral fat and gluteofemoral fat.]
- Ten Reasons To Practice Mindfulness Meditation - Don Matesz looks at meditation from a primal perspective. [I'm a fan of meditation ... though I'm finding the computer-assisted versions a great way to build a practice. See also: this link.]
- Train your Muscles, Embiggen your Hippocampus - scicurious reports on a study that finds that walking helps seniors retain brain mass.
- Gluten…In Theory - A very interesting theory on why there may be more gluten intolerance today. [The Weston Price people should be all over this one!]
- The First Low-Carb Doctor—2500 Years Ago - Was Hippocrates the father of the low-carb diet?
- Walkmeter - A cool looking app for the iPhone. [See hippocampus post ;)]
- 30 Second Lacto-fermented Salsa - [My kind of recipe! Start with store bought, and then make it healthier.]
Weight Maven is written by Beth Mazur. Beth believes that obesity is more symptom than cause and that the real problem is our Western diet -- especially sugar, refined grains, and industrial oils. Beth writes about nutrition, ancestral health, & food policy. And cats!
The BAI formula makes absolutely no sense. My BMI is 25.5 and body fat is 22%…BAI is 57???
I found my way to your blog from Debra’s Just Maintaining… and I am glad I did!
It’s a relief to find others out there who characterize obesity as a symptom.
I write mostly about the psycho-social side of things, but I like to stay up on the “hard science” side, too.
I’m thinking of easing into some Paleo patterns. I might start at Passover… I’ll already be jettisoning most of the grains and legumes at that point — so focusing on animal proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables and fruits could be easier. In the meantime, starting to think of meals as primarily protein + veg could be do-able.
Thanks for letting me explore some ambivalence — a necessary part of the change process.
Thanks for visiting!
Great list, now I have another goal I want to make your list next week. I can’t wait to go through these links. Ah, the day job. I sort of think its good that I have one or I would click on these links all day (not good).
