Okay, so call this for what it is — filler. A bit of a guilt-induced post because I’m spending all my online time on Twitter and Facebook. But seriously, was anyone else surprised by last night’s Top Chef?
Granted, the program as aired made it seem like Jeff, Carla, and Hosea all had done well — there was no clear winner based on the judges’ comments. However, it was also true that if Jeff was the winner, then both Fabio and Stefan would have to go, and that seemed to be a major problem given the strength of Team Euro. But, problem solved, Carla wins and Stefan is saved.
I might not give it another thought, except for this from Tom Colicchio’s blog on Bravo’s website:
That night, however, Jeff was never in the running for a reason that didn’t make it into the final edit. He did a very fine job, however he used some sort of sterno chafing dish to keep his oysters warm that, for whatever reason, imparted a taste of burning sterno to the oysters. We all smelled it and remarked on it while the chefs were setting up their stations, and then we tasted that horrible taste when we sampled his selections. So, unfortunately for Jeff, who otherwise was cooking very well, he could never have taken the top spot of the evening.
Seriously?!? An error so grave that it was noticed early on and then imparted a “horrible taste” never made it into on-air comments?
Yeesh. Jamie was my fave, so I won’t cry too many tears for Jeff, but heck, this has got to be at least as good a conspiracy story as some others.
