Life's a beach

Today’s the first full day at Nags Head with my extended family (my dad, his wife, and assorted kids and grandkids). The drive down was amazingly easy for a weekend, and after a morning of storms, the early evening is just beautiful.

Tonight’s highlight was amazing…we were serenaded by a young guy playing bagpipes as he rode down the main drag…on a unicycle!

He came into the driveway of the house and made about $40 in tips from the people here. Not a bad way to spend the summer.

Martina!

Oh rats. I picked a really, really bad day to have left the camera at home. And my colleagues who took lots of photos at the rally yesterday apparently weren’t at the session this AM with Martina Navratilova. Bummer, because…

She rocks!!

Actually, it was very interesting. She prepared some remarks for the crowd on the subject at hand (related to her book on fitness and health which is fab) and those were a bit stilted. She was working off her notes, and while the info was good, the delivery was one of someone who wasn’t the top of her game the way she has been on the courts.

But fortunately, that was just a small part of the session. She was truly amazing when she was interacting with the facilitator or the audience. What a great sense of humor and wit she has!

I hope we do a lot more with her. What an inspiration!

See Daily Kos for the backstory if you missed it.

BTW, I love the payoff at the end of the video: Jet Blue…only room for the right wing.

Cheap date…not!

Ah, it used to be that a weekend date with my twin nieces could be had on the cheap. Off to the park, to Mickey Donalds for some fries and a drink, or maybe some time at the mall.

No more!

Today’s date (seeing the latest Harry Potter — first time for me, third time for them) came in at around $50 or so for tickets, popcorn and drinks, and ice cream afterwards.

Given what they’ll cost their parents over their lifetime, I guess I can’t complain too much…it’s a small price to pay to maintain “most favored aunt” status :).

Work gossip

So, heard an interesting tidbit as I left work today. The president of the subsidiary where I used to work is leaving for greener pastures.

On the one hand, I must admit to being surprised. The rumor mill had her as a likely candidate for the CEO job of the parent one of these days. On the other, I have been speculating that the subsidiary is not going to come close to be making the revenue targets they are on the hook for this year, and that come Q3 or Q4, things are going to get dicey there.

I wonder if she thought the same?

Schmap

I wasn’t aware of the Schmap travel guides, but when I went to upload one of the cat photos to Flickr just now, I noticed that Schmap wants to use two of my photos in the next edition of their DC guide:

Clara Barton house

Rowboats

I get the Clara Barton photo, but think some of my other Fletcher’s Cove photos were better!
