The title and lede from an AP article on CNN.com today:

Child care linked to later behavioral issues
WASHINGTON (AP) — The more time that children spent in child care, the more likely their sixth-grade teachers were to report problem behavior.

Meanwhile, buried in grafs 5 and 10:

The researchers said that the increase in vocabulary and problem behaviors was small, and that parenting quality was a much more important predictor of child development.

… The authors emphasized that the children’s behavior was within a normal range and that it would be impossible to go into a classroom, and with no additional information, pick out those who had been in child care.

Note that the increase in vocabulary was actually a positive. All in all, seems a bit like unnecessarily guilt-tripping a few million parents, eh?

Flickr collections

Cool! When did Flickr add collections? I missed that one.

Anyways, another tool to get you to sign up for their services, since this is only useful for people with multiple sets — and sets are limited for the free service.

Oops

Back in January, I mentioned that I had watched a couple of planes miss their approach to National Airport and do a “do-over.” I speculated that this was because the approach from the north requires pilots to navigate a pretty good turn just before landing. I don’t think it’s a hardship for most pilots (while not really rare, these aren’t common either) used to flying into National, but every so often, it happens.

Anyways, ever since Jake suggested I was an “of an unqualified person talking about something that they do not know about,” presumably mistaking a takeoff of the same airline for a do-over, I’ve been keeping my camera ready.

Well, mostly ready. This video was captured with a digital camera, not video camera, and well, I missed the initial part of the bad approach (I can’t zoom/unzoom once it’s recording, and was just having trouble tracking in the viewer).

But yes Virginia…this is a flyover of National Airport:

Now the doubters will argue that I am again mistaking a take-off for a do-over, so I’ll probably post a photo showing the location of the water tower in relation to normal landings and takeoffs later today. It’s not even close.
