Not to worry, I will not be blogging about my Mat Lalonde-inspired approach for Lent every day, but a little accountability is going to help me get thru this tough part … day 3 without Diet Coke!
This would have been less hard if I could have used my fall-back drink (an Arnold Palmer with stevia) but I really do want to give this “no sweet tastes” thing a good college try.
I think I can, I think I can ;).

You know you can, you know you can!
I love diet coke. It would be hard to give up. Is it getting easier with time?
I know it gets easier, because I’ve given it up multiple times ;). After tomorrow I should be fine. What I may be considering is giving up the alternate, because that’s how DC winds up back in my diet. It’s just such an easy go-to over the holidays!
I have been drinking water for a long time now and very rarely drink soda any more. Water can get boring though. Over the last few months I have been drinking more tea and adding a little bit of coconut oil. Didn’t like oily tea at first, but now can’t live without it in my tea. I sometimes just nuke a cup of water for a minute and just add (flavorless–a la Seth Roberts) coconut oil only. Am now brewing some lemongrass tea from the plant I have growing in my yard.
Good luck to you Beth!
Thanks jo! Part of me thinks that if I can just get thru this, I can go back to my tea with stevia. But I do think it’d be better to get off the stuff as an everyday thing. I’m going to experiment with coconut water kefir (the grains arrive today!). I’m betting this is an acquired taste, but hey, I acquired the taste for beer at one point too ;).
Just putting this suggestion out there for anyone who is trying to stop drinking Diet Coke. The last time I dropped it (after many failed attempts), I first switched to the caffeine-free variety. That made the taper a LOT easier, and I have been DC-free for over a year now.
Good luck with your plan!
Thanks Meli! I too can vouch for this trick. I’ve used it in the past, but since I’m not allowing myself artificial sweeteners for now, I couldn’t do that this time.
Beth, i think you might want to try something i’ve enjoyed for years, and something derived that i just “invented” — chocolate tonic and the water-kefir version of it. i too think water (even water with lime) is just plain tedious.
simmer 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder with 1 cup of water, let cool, and serve over ice — even better with sweetener and heavy cream, of course! but since i’ve been doing the Personal Paleo code, that’s out.
recently i tried to make water-kefir with it — without the sugar, it doesn’t “ferment” as much, but it adds an interesting flavor and some probiotics.
Wow … I will definitely try this. I actually bought some dextrose to use as a non-fructose containing sweetener. I wonder if it would work to boost the fermenting process? I’ll have to experiment when if/when I add sugar back in.
I could easily see this added to my regular drink rotation … especially if/when I allow myself stevia again. I also have a Sodastream, so this might be something that’d be interesting to use as a flavoring for carbonated water. And I might experiment with adding a little cinnamon for a Mexican chocolate. Thanks!!
I am trying to get the courage to give up stevia drops in my tea. I am open to any suggestions.
