I got back from Nags Head just in time for DC’s annual restaurant week. This is this great promotion where over a hundred local restaurants provide a three-course fixed-price menu for a pretty reasonable price ($20/lunch, $30/dinner).
Talk about your win-win. Diners get generally great menus, and restaurants (should) attract new clientele.
For example, today, co-worker Carol and I went to The Caucus Room, which, as its name implies gives a nod to all things politics. It’s just over three blocks from work, but we’d avoided it because it seemed pompous and overpriced. But hey, for $20, it was worth a trial visit.
Anyways, lunch was fab. Although the choices were limited (just two each for apps and dessert), most of them were strong. The meatball appetizer was okay, but our entrees — her steak frites and my tilapia — were strong. And our dessert was as they say, to die for. A chocolate mousse in a chocolate cup with whipped cream and raspberries. To steal from Rachael Ray…yum-mo!
They were smart to provide their regular menu along with the special menu, so that gave us the opportunity to see that the regular price range for lunch was doable, so I think we may go back (though given the pomp, it may not be a regular on the rotation).
I can’t wait for Wednesday, when we visit Vidalia. According to their sample menus, it will be an extra $12.50 charge, but I’m already salivating over the prospect of their Baked Macaroni with Brad’s Goat Cheese and Summer Truffle.

now you are making me want to go!!
